Dropbox 0.8.80 - Everything can be shared !!!

From Dropbox Forum

hello!
Yet another bug fix release, we're still working on integrating selective sync into the tour so stay tuned!
0.8.80:
- Fix to regression in 0.8.78 that would occasionally prevent selective sync changes.
- Other small fixes.
Have fun!! All standard experimental build warnings apply ;)

Good news, everyone! Some of you may remember us making recent changes to your Sharing page, and wondered what they were for. Truth is, we were laying the foundation for a brand new feature that we've just finished:
Any file or folder in your Dropbox is now linkable!
These links are presented in a snazzy new web view that allows people to view or play your shared files straight from their browser.
Here's an example of a single file
And an example of a folder
After you've made your link, you can then share it with others by pasting the link, or via Twitter and Facebook. Also, other users visiting your link can copy its contents straight to their Dropbox. Pretty sweet, huh?
Here's how it works:
1. From the web or desktop app, pull up the context menu of the file/folder you'd like to share, then click 'Get shareable link'
2. This takes you to the page view of the file/folder you're linking, and you can grab the link from the top of the page.
3. You can then share this link with anyone!
Some more info:
  • This will only work with Dropbox clients 0.8 or higher and the feature is currently in beta. You'll have to restart your client to enable the feature. You can get it here
  • All your links are viewable from the 'Linked Items' tab on you Sharing page. You can even make shared folder links, which will be viewable from both tabs.
  • The public folder will still work as it always has.
  • The music player will keep autoplaying until it runs out of stuff to play. It's pretty handy to set it and forget it ;) (In the future: more controls for the media players)
  • Office files, pdfs, code files, etc. are all displayed using custom viewers (or scribd, when appropriate)
  • My current favorite sharing model trick: selective sync my entire music library, and still be able to play all my music via sharing model from my laptop
  • On the horizon: password protection and expiration, other cool stuff
Special thanks to Trevor, Arash, Drew, the web team, the server team and Albert for making this possible. Enjoy the sharing model!

Stench from oil spill affects East Coast Park

East Coast Park smelled like a petrol station yesterday.
The stench of oil had park users speculating if it had come from an oil spill which resulted after a tanker and bulk carrier collided yesterday morning.
They were right.
In a joint statement by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the National Environment Agency (NEA), the authorities confirmed that the smell was a result of the oil spill from the tanker.
Lighter portions of the oil could have evaporated which may have caused the smell.
The statement also said that the smell had subsided by late afternoon, and that there was no cause for alarm as NEA's monitoring has detected no toxic chemicals in the air.
When The New Paper team checked to see how bad the oil spill was yesterday, we noticed a faint whiff at Changi Village. The smell worsened when we got to East Coast Park.
The slick has not reached the beaches.

RUMOR: Apple to make MobileMe free

Apple MobileMe Internet ServiceWe have received a tip that we cannot confirm, hence our "RUMOR" designation, that nonetheless has at least an air of credibility about it that says, "Apple is planning to make MobileMe free."

MobileMe also offers MobileMe Gallery for sharing your photos, Find My iPhone and Find my iPad, which helps you locate your lost (or stolen) device, Remote Wipe, which allows you to remotely delete your personal information and restore devices to their to the factory settings, iDisk, for storing, accessing, and sharing files online (starts at 20GB), Me.com, a suite of ad-free web applications — Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Gallery, iDisk, and Find My iPhone — all accessible from a browser on any Mac or PC, Back to My Mac puts any Mac OS X Leopard- or Snow Leopard-based Mac you use within easy reach from anywhere, Secure iChat, which lets you protect your chats with robust, 128-bit encryption, the free iDisk app which lets you view files on your iDisk right on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, share content from iPhoto, iMovie, QuickTime, and Aperture, seamless iWeb integration, personal domain name hosting, and more.

MobileMe was originally launched on January 5, 2000, as "iTools," a free collection of Internet-based services for users of Mac OS 9. iTools was relaunched as ".Mac" on July 17, 2002, when it became a $99 per year subscription service. .Mac was relaunched as "MobileMe" at WWDC 2008 on July 9, 2008.

No timeframe was given for MobileMe to go free, other than: "sooner than later... depends on certain facilities going operational."

That's all we have at this time.
