Stickies on MacOSX: Tips, Tricks & Secrets

With the Mac App Store open and business booming for Apple developers, it’s easy to get into the habit of grabbing a bunch of useful third-party applications to handle your computing needs. While there’s nothing wrong with doing this, you may find yourself surprised at just how powerful some of OS X’s built-in tools are.
The next stop on our quest to help you make the best of your Mac is Stickies, the surprisingly powerful built-in notes application that you may not be using to the full potential, if at all!
Let’s fix that, shall we?

The Basics

Stickies lives in your Applications folder by default, and you can always pull it up quickly by using Spotlight (Command + Space) or your preferred application launcher. Each time you open Stickies, it will restore everything just as you left it — all your notes in their exact positions, so you never have to worry about losing your scribbles.
You’ll notice that the notes themselves look a lot like basic post-its, and for those of us who used to swear by sticking post-its to our monitors to remember things, it’s gratifying to see the same eye-catching look making its way to the digital equivalent.
Feeling Sticky?
Feeling Sticky?
For the purposes of this article, we’re discussing the features of the actual Stickies application rather than the almost-identical Dashboard widget. The two are not one and the same, and the widget lacks some of the functionality of its big brother, so just keep in mind that you may not be able to apply these tips to both.
In any event, Stickies notes are a lot more robust than their paper counterparts, so let’s walk through some of the basic features to start with:

Text Wrangling

Since it makes use of the same text engine that drives TextEdit, Stickies is ready to handle all sorts of common text formatting commands including modifications of font type, size, color, and style with ease. If you want to insert a list as you type rather than having to paste one in and modify it, simply hit Option + Tab and you’ve got your first bullet point ready to go.
In addition, Stickies also supports the built-in dictionary so you can use your handy Control + Command + D shortcut to pull up the dictionary box in an instant. Remember, that little shortcut doesn’t need you to have a word highlighted — as long as that key combination is held down, a definition will automatically be pulled up for any word under your cursor!

Flexible Notes

One of the most immediate advantages of Stickies over paper post-its is that you are free to drag the corners to make your notes as big or as small as they need to be; perfect for containing your information without cluttering up the screen too much. You can easily change the color of each sticky too by using the Color menu, which makes it easy to categorize them as you like.

Sticky Shrinking and Info

It’s also worth remembering that you can quickly de-clutter your stickies by minimizing the ones you don’t need to see all the time. To do this, just double-click each sticky’s top bar, or select it and press Command + M to shrink it down to a short little bar with only the first line of text showing.
If you want to then get a quick sense of when you made each sticky and when you last modified it, without having to bring it back up to size, you need only hover your mouse over it and a window will appear giving you all the details. This also works when the sticky is maximized, of course.
Minimized Info
Minimizing and Info Gathering

Translucent Stickies

And if you want them to fade into the background a bit, you can adjust their transparency too: simply go to the note you’d like to make translucent and hit Command + Option + T. Hit the same combo again to bring the note back to its original opacity.
You can also access this function through the menu via Note -> Translucent Window, and if you’ve set up your sticky to be just the way you need it, then you can hit “Use As Default” in that same menu to ensure that all your new stickies conform to those settings.

Floating

One of the most useful features of Stickies is that you can choose to make any sticky remain pinned on top of all other windows so that you never lose it behind the other things you’re working on. This is especially useful for notes that you find yourself referring back to frequently, like to-do lists, code snippets, etc.
To get a note to float like this, simply select it and hit Command + Option + F. Alternatively, you can use the top menu by going to Note -> Floating Window.

Cycle Through Stickies

Once you’ve got some stickies floating and some not, it can be a hassle to quickly select the one you’re after, especially if they’re hiding behind other windows. To circumvent this annoyance, simply select any one of your stickies and hit Command + ~ (tilde) to cycle through all your stickies just like Alt + Tab does for applications.

Other File Types

In addition to holding text, Stickies will happily take most document, image, video, and audio files that you toss at it. Simply drag a file into the sticky and you’re good to go!
Inserting Media
Inserting Media

Plays Well With Others

One of the coolest features of Stickies is the ability to send text and other data from nearly any native OS X application using the Services menu. For instance, if you want to remember one of the handy shortcuts we’ve mentioned here, you can simply select the paragraph, go to the application’s menu (so, for example, you could click “Firefox” up left beside “File”), go to Services, and hit “Make New Sticky Note”.
There is, of course, a shortcut for that, so if you want to save yourself some needless clicking then simply select your text and press Command + Shift + Y. Works with all sorts of things, so give it a try and save yourself some copy/pasting time!

More Fancy Features and Tricks

If you’re yawning at the basic functionality above, then read on for a look at some of the more clever things that can be accomplished with Stickies. Roll up your sleeves though, because a few of these tricks require you to get your hands dirty…

Linking To Emails

In the same way that you can drag in most media files, many users overlook the ability to drag in emails to Stickies. If you’re already keeping track of to-dos with Stickies and want to make it easier to handle emails that you need to follow up with, you should get in the habit of dragging them into your to-do sticky.
They’ll show up as a link (with the subject line as the text) and you can add any additional notes that you need. That way, when you’re ready to deal with the email, your sticky will not only remind you and tell you what kind of response you were thinking of, it will also give you a handy link straight to the email so you don’t have to hunt it down manually.

Start Stickies on Startup

This one’s easy, but it’s something that doesn’t occur to many people. If you want your stickies to be available right from boot (which makes sense if that’s where you keep your to-do notes!) then it’s simply a matter of adding Stickies to your startup applications list.
You’ll find this list in System Preferences -> Accounts. Just select the “Login Items” tab and hit the little plus button, then find and add Stickies to the list and the next time you log in with that account, Stickies will start automatically for you.

Stickies, Meet Dropbox

This one’s more involved. By now you know how much we adore Dropbox, so it should come as no surprise that there’s a trick for getting your Stickies synced between all your machines using the service.
The method is identical to the one described in previous articles on the subject, but for those unfamiliar with the process, we’re going to essentially move the real Stickies database file to our Dropbox folder and then create a symbolic link to it (kind of like a more powerful alias) in its original location. It’s not overly complicated, but it requires a bit more work.
You can do this manually using the Terminal, but if you’d rather not have to do that each time you need to make a symbolic link, we recommend grabbing this set of Automator actions.
To use them, open the package and open Automator. Go to File -> Import Actions and select the “Create Symbolic Link” action from the root of the disk image.
Then simply navigate to the Sample Workflows folder on the disk image and double-click “Create Symbolic Link” to open it in Automator. The last step is to go to File -> Save As Plugin and give it a name (I called it “Create Symbolic Link”).
Now whenever you need to create a symbolic link, simply right click the file, select More -> Automator, and the menu will now have “Create Symbolic Link” (or whatever you called it) as an option!
With that out of the way, setting up sync is easy. Go into your User/Library folder, grab the “StickiesDatabase” file, and drop it wherever you want in your Dropbox folder. Once it’s in there, right click it, select Create Symbolic Link as described above via the Automator menu, and point it right back to the User/Library folder.
Name it “StickiesDatabase” and click Continue to place the symbolic link. That’s it!
Create Symbolic Link
Create Symbolic Link
Now whenever you want to sync your Stickies with another computer, simply navigate to that computer’s User/Library folder, delete that StickiesDatabase file (after backing up the info you need, of course), and create a symbolic link back to there from the StickiesDatabase file that’s already in your Dropbox!

Scrollbars

This one’s for the real nerds. If you have the OS X developer tools installed, you can fix one of the only annoying issues with Stickies, which is that notes with large amounts of text do not produce scrollbars, so you must use your arrow keys to navigate them. It’s a silly oversight, and one that will take you five minutes to fix.
Before we start, make sure you quit Stickies and Option + Drag its application icon to a safe place to make a backup in case something goes wrong and you need to revert.
With a copy safely made, right click the original Stickies application icon and go to “Show Package Contents”. Then, in Contents -> Resources -> English.lproj, look for a file called “StickiesDocument.nib” and double-click it to pop it open in Interface Builder (part of the developer toolkit).
Interface Builder
The Icon Box and Inspector
When it opens, you should see a mostly white window with Stickies in the title bar, a library box on the right, and a window with several icons on the left. If you don’t see the blank Stickies window, then double-click the “Window” icon in the left box to bring it up.
You’ll also need to go to Tools -> Inspector to bring up the Inspector window. The Inspector window’s title bar will most likely say “Stickies Window Attributes”.
What you need to do at this point is simply click once inside the white space in the blank Stickies window. This will change the Inspector window’s title bar to “Scroll View Attributes”.
You’ll now notice the Inspector is giving you check boxes for both horizontal and vertical scrollers, as well as the option to automatically hide them. We want to check “Show Vertical Scroller” and “Automatically Hide Scrollers” to get the functionality we’re after.
When those are done, you can use Command + S to save the file, then safely quit Interface Builder — you’re done! Next time you open Stickies, they will sport proper vertical scroll bars whenever your text is too long to fit. You can use the same method to enable the horizontal scrollers too, if you like.

Tourists could see Southeast Asia on single visa

JAKARTA: Travellers could soon be able surf in Bali, shop in Singapore and eat spicy street food in Thailand before crossing into Cambodia and cruising the Mekong in Vietnam -- all on a single tourist visa.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is working on a plan that would open the region to foreign tourists in the same way Europe's unified visa system has streamlined travel.

"You would just have to apply for one visa and you could then visit all the countries using that visa," said Eddy Krisneidi, an official at the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretariat, which recently released its Tourism Strategic Plan for the next five years.

With attractions ranging from jungle-covered temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia to five-star beach resorts in Bali, Southeast Asia is a region that tempts travellers from all walks of life.

ASEAN countries recorded more than 65 million foreign visitor arrivals in 2009. Malaysia led the field, followed by Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei.

Analysts say visitor numbers could be boosted by slashing the time-consuming and confusing visa requirements for each of ASEAN's 10 countries, which range from vibrant developing democracies to isolated, military-dominated Myanmar.

While some allow foreigners to simply purchase visas on arrival, others require wads of paperwork, photos and up to a week to issue the required stamp.

"One of the major concerns of the industry, as well as visitors, is the difficulty of obtaining visas, a series of widely differing regulations and information needs for visas," ASEAN's strategic plan states.

It is a view shared by Stuart McDonald, who runs an online travel forum for Southeast Asia.

"One of the most common questions that we see on travelfish.org is people asking visa questions: What kind of visa can I get? How long is it valid for? What does it cost?," said the Australian who travels extensively in Asia.

"The rules change all the time and it introduces a level of uncertainty and confusion that the industry can do without."

The concept of a single visa has wide support among tourism bodies across Southeast Asia.

"It would definitely benefit all the countries in this region, especially Thailand," Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Suraphon Svetasreni said, noting that Thailand is a "good strategic location" for overland travelling as it acts as a bridge to other countries.

Svetasreni said it is only a matter of time until the region's visa system is liberalised.

"ASEAN will be considered as a single destination, so it makes sense to apply for a single visa to travel to any country in ASEAN," he said.

Despite its appeal, others are less optimistic that a single visa will become a reality anytime soon.

"Travel procedures have to be simplified but it is not going to be easy because each country may have their own foreign policy," Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel inbound tourism vice president Arul Das said.

ASEAN is yet to outline the cost or length of stay for its planned single tourist visa. But it acknowledges it could take several years to introduce.

"The establishment of such a visa will not likely occur in the next five years due to barriers of technology, political issues, concerns of sovereignty and security and the different visa systems in the member states," its strategic plan states.

The single visa is one of several initiatives being worked on by ASEAN to boost tourism in the region.

The organisation is also overseeing the creation of regional tourism standards which would apply to things such as accommodation, food and public toilets.

"There are already clear indications that major tour operators are now very much concerned with a wide range of standards in a destination," the plan states.

"Those destinations that are able to satisfy those increasingly high standards will have a distinct position of advantage."

Picasa will make the change permanent after double-checking with you. Want to change a picture's filename from 671056398a.jpg to Lisa.jpg? In Picasa, it only takes seconds to re-name one picture or a group of pictures.
Make an album.

Use the "Albums" collection to tag your photos into quick groupings inside Picasa. Viewing and sharing the pictures you grouped under an album is easy – they make great slideshows and movies or you can email them to friends.
Add a star rating.

Give a gold star to any photo you love: it turns your favourites into visual standouts at a glance. Picasa even has a star search that reduces your entire photo collection to the best of the best in less than a second.
Keep one picture in multiple albums.

Picasa creates a new “instance” of each photo you label without taking up more space on your computer, so you can put the same picture into multiple albums.
Password-protect collections.

Have photos you want to keep to yourself? You can add passwords to any of your Picasa collections (this does not affect which pictures you and others can see on your computer’s hard drive).

Edit
Turn a grey sky into a picture-perfect day.
Basic Fixes are back – and better.

Picasa's Basic Fixes are buttons that make it fast and easy to crop, remove red eye, fix the contrast and colour, and enhance your digital pictures.
Amazing effects turn so-so pictures into works of art.

You can see how much Picasa's 12 new visual effects can improve your photos – and in seconds, not hours. Go sepia. Warmify. Make pictures pop with colour or try austere black-and-white. Try easy one-clicks or the more finely tuned sliders for better control where you want it. And of course, you can undo your changes at any step along the way.
Write captions that stay with the picture.

Picasa makes captions the way journalists do – using the IPTC standard. That means your captions are saved within their pictures and stay with them, whether you export as a web page or make a CD presentation. Picasa captions are fully editable and searchable, and you choose whether to display them or not.
Zoom. Pan. Tilt. Get the angle you intended.

So you did not get the shot? With Picasa, that is not the end of the story. Go in closer and move the focus slightly to the left. Your camera was slightly crooked? So what? Your picture is perfect anyway.
Know how to use a camera in manual mode?

Photography aficionados can now fine-tune their photos with Picasa's EXIF display. This window shows you all the camera data that is stored in a picture's original file - such as camera model, date the photo was taken, even if a flash was used. The EXIF display also has a RGB histogram, a real-time graph that shows the intensity of colours in your picture and how they change when you make edits in Picasa.

Share
The hardest part of sharing your pictures is choosing your favourites.
Gmail
Send photos via email that are a joy to receive.

Take the guesswork out of sending photos. Picasa automatically resizes and attaches pictures to email messages at sizes your friends will be able to open. Works with most email programs, including Google Mail.

Become an Alfred Expert: Advanced Tips & Tricks

Standard Features

The basic, free version of Alfred is pretty awesome just one its own. There’s no need to purchase their Powerpack for the following features, and they are a solid indicator of what Alfred can do right out of the box.

Calculator

One of the cool features announced in Apple’s Spotlight was the ability to use it as a simple calculator. You’ll be pleased to know that Alfred sports exactly the same functionality. Just hit your keyboard shortcut to launch Alfred, and type a calculation!
An example calculation
An example calculation
Once you’ve figured out how this feature works, head into Dashboard, and remove that calculator widget that’s been sitting there for months. No harm in freeing up a tiny bit of extra RAM!
If you want to enable advanced calculations, open preferences and tick “Enable advanced calculator with keyword ‘=’”. This allows you do do things such as =sin(23).

Perform System Commands

Next up, did you know that Alfred is very capable when it comes to controlling your system itself? You can start your screensaver, empty the trash, log out, sleep, shut down, eject your optical drive, and quite a bit more!
Even better, all the commands for these functions are completely customisable – a big time-saver if you use them regularly.

Check Your Spelling / Define Words

If you regularly find yourself opening the OS X Dictionary app (or using the Command-Control-D shortcut to define a word), you should consider making the most of Alfred for all your spelling needs…
Just type “define word” to be presented with a short definition, then hit return to open the full Dictionary entry. Or, you can type “spell word” to have Alfred suggest a word that matches the first part of your query.
Define and spell. That's swell.

Search Google Fast

Want a ridiculously fast way to open a particular search in Google? Invoke Alfred, type your search query, then hit Alt+Enter. Boom. I wish there were a few more steps to pad this one out, but unfortunately, it’s just that fast!

Create a Custom Search

Although there’s a huge range of pre-packaged search terms and query formats in Alfred, it’s really simple to create your own. As an example, let’s create a search query that will automatically search Mac.AppStorm.
Here’s what I would need to enter in Alfred’s preferences:
Creating a Custom Search
Creating a Custom Search
To figure out what goes in the “Search URL” field, perform a search on your favourite site, and copy the resulting URL into this field in Alfred. Look for the text that you typed in for your search, and replace it with the following: {query} – This tells Alfred to dynamically insert your new search query into this part of the URL.
Here’s what it looks like when you come to execute this new custom search:

Powerpack Features

If you like what you see in the free version of Alfred, you should consider purchasing the Powerpack for £12. This unlocks a range of extra functionality, and makes the app even more useful. Here are a few advanced tips and tricks for Powerpack users!

Email With/Without Attachments

If you’d like a quick way to pen a new email to a contact, Alfred is the way to go. Just type “email”, followed by the first few letters of a contact. Hit return, and a new message will pop up in your default email client.
Sending a normal email

There’s also a great way to quickly send an email with an attachment. Open Alfred, type “Find”, followed by the name of the file you want to send. Hit the right arrow key, select “Email To”, then type the first few letters of a contact name. Hit the return key, and you’ll be good to go!

Clipboard & Snippets

There are countless applications out there that are able to store and retrieve a history of clipboard entries. It’s a handy tool to have installed, as there’s nothing more frustrating than accidentally overwriting an important snippet that you’ve copied to your clipboard.
Alfred steps in to help here, with a simple solution for storing anything that’s copied to your clipboard. The feature is disabled by default – you’ll need to activate it in preferences. Afterwards, just type “clipboard” to be shown your history log.
You can also store persistent “snippets” that will remain available indefinitely – a simple solution for being able to expand commonly used phrases or sentences with a couple of keystrokes.

File Actions

Although Alfred is great at helping you find the file you’re looking for, it’s also possible to perform a range of actions on a file after you’ve located it. After typing “find filename“, locate the file you want, then hit the right arrow key.
You’ll then be presented with a list of different file actions:
Handling File Actions

Each of these works brilliantly, and can be far quicker than navigating around using Finder and your mouse. Give it a try next time you want to move a file from one place to another, attach it to an email, or delete it!

Show Recent Documents

If you want to open a file that you’ve recently accessed, Alfred gives you a really quick and easy way to do so. Just start by typing in the name of the application in question, hit the right arrow, and then select “Recent Documents”. It’s that easy!
Here’s an example showing my recently accessed documents in Pixelmator:

Control iTunes

There’s no need for that quirky iTunes shortcut app in your Menu Bar any more – at least not if you’re a Powerpack user. Open Alfred, type “iTunes”, and select “Show the iTunes Mini Player” (you can also set up a custom shortcut to go straight there if you’d prefer). The first time it runs, it will take a few seconds to index your iTunes library:
Indexing iTunes...
Indexing iTunes...
After this process completes (it took about five seconds on my library of several hundred gigabytes), you’ll be good to go. You can search for albums and artists, control the currently playing track, and even rate songs!
To pause or play a song, type “Alt + Cmd + down arrow”, use “Alt + Cmd + Left/right arrow” to select previous or next song on your playlist. Or to rate a tune, just hit “Alt + Cmd + number from 1 to 5″.

15 Free Alternatives to Popular Mac Software

There’s a huge range of amazing paid software out there, but more often than not there is some form of free alternative. For those of us who can’t afford to spend up on every great app we desire, gathered here are 15 great free pieces of software that achieve much the same purpose of a popular but paid application.
Of course – nine times out of ten you get what you pay for, and the paid applications are usually going to do the job better, look nicer, or have more features than any free app. But that doesn’t mean free applications are worth overlooking, as they will often be more than functional enough for your needs.
Join us after the break for a look at some great examples…!

Photoshop Alternative: Seashore

Photoshop is without question a brilliant piece of software, but at a whopping $700, most people looking for a general photo editing application might want something a bit more modest. Pixelmator is well worth a try at $29, but as far as free photo editing apps go, Seashore might be perfect for those on a tight budget.
This open source image editor is based off GIMP, but runs in a clean and simple interface with enough features to keep modest users happy.
Seashore handles layers, alpha channels, and has a decent tool set.  Within the Menubar are a number of effects and image editing controls to play with including basics such as contrast and hue sliders.  These sliders fade after each adjustment, which is a convenient feature to see the effects of your changes. Well worth a look.

AppZapper Alternative: AppCleaner

AppZapper ($13) is a great application for properly deleting applications, widgets, preference panes and plug-ins. When you drag an application to AppZapper, it finds all the files that relate to that app so that you can delete the whole application without leaving odd bits scattered around your hard drive.
AppCleaner from Free Mac Soft is an incredibly similar application, but it’s free.  Like AppZapper, cleaning up apps is as simple as dragging one from the Finder to the AppCleaner window.  Once dragged, AppCleaner will instantly identify all the files that the application has created across the system, which can all be trashed by clicking ‘Delete’.
AppCleaner
AppCleaner
Files can also be found from within AppCleaner under three different categories and searched for.  There is a bug within the application which means that as you search, the list updates live but the icons remain where they were which can cause a bit of confusion.
AppCleaner boasts a few features that AppZapper doesn’t have.  A very nifty feature is ‘SmartDelete’, which means that when you drag an app to the trash, you will be asked if you would like to also delete related files.  This even works when AppCleaner isn’t open.
You can also drop in specific apps to protect from deleting with AppCleaner. Of course, AppZapper has its own special features, including a license and serial storage space for your own apps and stunning animations.

Parallels/Fusion Alternative: VirtualBox

For those of you on Mac who still need to run Windows, the first names that you’d hear would be Parallels and VMware Fusion (each $80), both of which are powerful and highly praised Windows virtualization tools.  But there’s also a third player out there which you may not have heard of; VirtualBox.
VirtualBox is an open source application which, whilst missing some of the features and performance of the commercial apps, stands up very well for those looking to use Windows for tasks which don’t tow too heavily on the processor.  VirtualBox is definitely a viable alternative to Parallels and Fusion if you’re happy to put up with what it lacks in comparison.
VirtualBox
VirtualBox
Also don’t forget Apple’s own Boot Camp, which comes pre-installed on Macs, but requires you to reboot the computer each time you want to change operating system.

Linkinus Alternative: Colloquy

Linkinus ($20) and Colloquy are IRC (Instant Relay Chat) clients which allow you to connect to a chat room on a certain topic to chat with like-minded people around the world.  Both applications do a great job, but as an open source app Colloquy is well worth a look and has a great user base.
Colloquy is a reliable and well designed application which can be customized to suit your style.  It has a great range of features (including growl notifications) and has plenty to play around with inside the preferences. I also personally really like the set of sound effects included for the various alerts.
I’d recommend giving Colloquy a go if your looking into an IRC app that works well and is easy to use, but with plenty of more advanced features for regular users.

Transmit Alternative: Cyberduck

Transmit ($34) would be one of the most popular and publicized FTP clients for Mac, and for good reason.  Cyberduck may not pack the same feature set and flair, but it is a great open source alternative.
From my experience it always works perfectly for connecting, uploading and downloading files from FTP servers.  Of course it doesn’t only support FTP and can connect to a whole heap of different servers, as well as letting you edit any text files directly from the server.
The interface of Cyberduck is easy to use and navigate for those with little experience surrounding FTP, and it’s certainly worth checking out.

Concentrate Alternative: Isolator

Concentrate ($29) is a fantastic application to help you get rid of distractions on your computer so that you focus on the task at hand. It can do a whole heap of tasks such as quitting applications, setting chat statuses to ‘away’, running AppleScripts, and blocking websites such as Facebook.
Isolator is a free application that aims to solve the same problem, but does so in a completely different manner. Basically, it ‘isolates’ the current active application and dims everything else in the background.  Isolator sits in the menu bar and can be activated by keyboard short cut.
Within the Isolator preferences, you can adjust a whole range of settings.  In terms of appearance, you can change how opaque the background is made, and even blur out the background windows using a number of effects.  This app also works seamlessly with Spaces.

InDesign Alternative: Scribus

InDesign ($700) is a professional page layout tool for designing print projects such as newsletters.  If you gawked at that price then it might be a good idea to take a look at Scribus, an open source desktop publishing application.
The interface leaves a bit to be desired, as it is a little confusing at first. To counter it’s interface though, Scribus has all the features you’d expect and a few more for good measure, such as vector shapes. It comes with fantastic documentation which walks you through all the things it can do, and the website has a wealth of more information and tutorials.
If you’re prepared to give Scribus some time then it could be a great desktop publisher for you.

Pages Alternative: OpenOffice

Pages ($20) is the word processing part of the iWork bundle from Apple. It is a brilliant application for writing and basic page layout, but it too has a completely free, open source alternative; OpenOffice.
OpenOffice runs natively in OS X, (rather than in X11 like it used to) and is smooth and fast. It’s easy to use and looks more or less the same as any other word processing app. Like most free vs paid apps, it may not pack all the bells and whistles that Pages, or even Microsoft Word has, but OpenOffice should fit the majority of peoples needs.
OpenOffice is actually a full office suite and includes Presentation, Spreadsheets, and even Drawing applications alongside the word-processor, so can replace the entire iWork or Microsoft Office suite.
OpenOffice
OpenOffice

CoverScout Alternative: Album Artwork Assistant

CoverScout ($30) is a wonderfully designed application that makes applying and editing album artwork in your iTunes library a pleasure. Album Artwork Assistant doesn’t have the same wow factor and features, but if you’re looking for something free to apply album artwork to your music without doing everything manually, this might be just for you.
Album Artwork Assistant isn’t completely automated.  You have to go into iTunes and select all the tracks from albums that you want to add artwork to.  Then AAA will load those tracks up and as you click on each album, it will do an image search across the internet for artwork.
You can Quick Look images, and even browse the web if AAA doesn’t yield the right pictures.  Once you’ve got the right one, you just click ‘Add Immediately’ and it will be applied to the iTunes tracks.  It can be a little buggy in selecting tracks to search but overall is worth giving a go.
Album Artwork Assistant
Album Artwork Assistant
Also, you may not be aware that iTunes has a built in Album Artwork finder.  It will only work for tracks with the correct labels and only if iTunes has them in it’s store, but here’s how to go about that… Within iTunes, click ‘Advanced’ in the menu bar, then ‘Get Album Artwork’.

CoverSutra Alternative: Bowtie

The Bowtie Bowlet, which sits on the Desktop
The Bowtie Bowlet, which sits on the Desktop

CoverSutra ($5) is an app which gives you easy access to search and controlling iTunes, as well as displaying album artwork and information directly on the Desktop.  Bowtie is a very similar, but is a free application which also does a great job.
Bowtie places a small Album icon on your Desktop which you can drag around and place where you like.  Clicking on it brings up song information and iTunes controls including ratings.  The themes can be customized, and more can be downloaded from an ever-growing selection.
Last.fm scrobbling is supported, and you can set up a huge variety of keyboard shortcuts to control Bowtie and iTunes.  A really nice app to use to enhance your iTunes experience.
Bowtie Preferences

MainMenu Alternative: IceClean

MainMenu ($19) is a great system maintenance tool which sits in the menu bar.  IceClean performs many of the same functions as MainMenu for a zero dollar price tag.
IceClean contains an abundance of features stored throughout various menus, which include repairing disk permissions, routine maintenance scripts, clearing caches, looking up network info and force ejecting CDs/DVDs.  This utility is well worth a download if you’re an advanced Mac user and understood what all the features above meant!
IceClean
IceClean

DaisyDisk alternative: DiskWave

DaisyDisk ($20) offers a beautiful visual representation of where your hard drive space is being used up, so that you can then go about and free up space by deleting large and unimportant files.
DiskWave lacks the charm and visual charts of DaisyDisk, but if your looking for a free, functional application to discover what is hogging up all your space, it could be all you need.  You start off by selecting a drive to scan.  Once it’s finished searching through your drive, all of your files will be displayed as they are in the finder, but ordered from largest to smallest and color coded based on size.
It’s then fairly straight forward to work your way through the layers of folders to find troublesome files, which can be deleted from within the app by pressing the ‘Delete’ button.  There are also buttons to Quick Look the files or reveal them in the Finder. DiskWave is still under development according to it’s site but is fully functional as it is.
DiskWave
DiskWave

Illustrator Alternative: Inkscape

Illustrator ($600) is the go-to drawing application for vector work, and it works wonders.  But as with all Adobe products, the price tag is a bit frightening for many.  Luckily Inkscape, an open source vector drawing application exists.  Inkscape is easy to use, especially if you’re familiar with Illustrator, and packs a great range of features that will get you through most projects.
Unfortunately it is not a native Mac application and requires Apple’s X11 app to run but this is only a small downside.  If you’re wondering if Inkscape is capable of producing stunning looking work, you only need to take a peek into the Inkscape DeviantART page to see what it’s users are creating.
Inkscape also has fantastic support for importing Illustrator files and I was very impressed at how even complex files were imported flawlessly, ready to be edited. If you can’t afford to fork out big bucks for Illustrator, Inkscape is well and truly worth a look and may suit you perfectly.

TextMate Alternative: TextWrangler

TextMate ($55) is a powerful text editor, which is great for editing all sorts of code such as HTML.  A wonderful free alternative to TextMate is TextWrangler, from Bare Bones Software.  This application packs a huge selection of features, mostly tucked away in its menu.
It excels in areas such as find and replace, syntax coloring for many various coding languages, code folding, FTP opening and saving, and much much more.  TextWrangler is very straight forward to use and the interface is simple and clean. It’s perfect for programmers, but also serves the needs of basic text editing as well.
TextWrangler
TextWrangler

Coda Alternative: Aptana Studio

Coda ($100) is a wonderful web development app from the team at Panic which brings all the main elements of website creation together into one window.  The interface looks great and is a joy to use, but if you’d like an app which can do much of the same stuff for free, Aptana Studio is a great place to start.
Aptana Studio is excellent for editing HTML, JavaScript, and CSS and offers Live Previews in any web browsers you have. There is outline view of all elements, and full validation is included.  There’s also support for FTP access and publishing. Overall, it has a very sturdy feature set – so much so that the Preferences are somewhat of a nightmare to work through!
Aptana Studio is cross platform so not specifically designed for Mac, but it is a very powerful web development application that is definitely worth looking into whether you are an aspiring or experienced website developer.
